SAP EWM add-ons (6.): Receiving by scanning EANs

Receiving mixed-content packaging (pallets, boxes) containing multiple items of different articles, which are not sorted by article side by side.

This receiving process may be unusual and not widely applicable, but we still consider it an elegant solution. It is useful in situations where the entire content of a box, containing different articles that may not be stored side by side in the packaging, needs to be received. In this process, we assume that the entire box will be stored at a single target location — there’s no need to split the articles into separate positions.

Business case

It is necessary to quickly receive and store the contents of a supplier’s package, which contains multiple different articles that may not be stored side by side in the packaging.

  • EWM standard requires scanning the EAN of one specific item and entering the total quantity in the open package
  • Additionally, the standard does not allow creating a handling unit containing multiple different items on the reader

Our brand-new receiving application for the mobile terminal includes these simple steps:

  • Selection of the reference supplier delivery note
  • Opening the supplier’s package, typically containing a large number of different items stacked on top of each other
  • Scanning the EAN codes of individual products in the package as they come to the warehouse worker’s hand—in no particular order
  • Each scan adds the quantity of the goods + 1
  • Displaying a checklist of scanned items and their quantities
  • Retrieving the target storage location, and storing the entire mixed content in its original packaging into the rack
  • Only after the package is stored, implicit accounting for the receipt of the contents of the package automatically takes place
