SAP EWM add-ons (2.): The proposal for resource type change

Add-on for SAP Extended Warehouse Management by Mibcon

Automatic proposal of warehouse handling technique changes

In one of my posts, I have mentioned the automatic assignment of tasks to the warehouse worker’s reader, based among other things on the type of handling equipment they are using. It’s clear that with certain equipment, a worker can only perform specific warehouse activities. This means that if the worker doesn’t select the appropriate equipment, some important tasks may remain unprocessed.

So, in 2021, a solution to this question was created and we are successfully applying it to other projects.

Business case

Standard EWM allows a warehouse worker to log into a mobile terminal with a specific resource. The resource typically represents a certain type of handling equipment with specific reach and usage, such as a low-lift truck (LLT). A task is then assigned to this resource that this specific type of equipment can handle. Once all tasks for the given resource are completed, the worker must ask the supervisor what to do next.

We aim to suggest to the warehouse worker which type of handling equipment they should use, or whether they should switch the equipment they are currently using.

  1. We define the priority (suitability) of different types of resources for the user
  2. If a task is found for a higher-priority type of resource, we suggest to the user to switch the resource (park the current handling equipment and take another one).
  3. After completing the task for the given resource type, we display a notification on the reader that there is a task available for a lower-priority resource.

Examples of situations

  • The warehouse worker is operating a low-lift truck (LLT), but there is higher-priority task for a reach truck, and he could handle it.
  • The warehouse worker has completed all tasks for the reach truck and could continue working with the low-lift truck (LLT).
After completing the tasks for the higher-priority handling equipment, the warehouse worker will receive a proposal to switch equipment.
