SAP EWM add-ons (17.): Custom Fiori KPI

  • July 15, 2024

Extended CDS Views compared to the SAP EWM standard, model KPIs based on them.

The solution for operational dashboards using the Warehouse Cockpit, which I wrote about in the article SAP EWM add-ons (16.): Warehouse Cockpit, is great but has its limitations.

The first limitation is the SAP GUI environment, to which this tool is restricted. Dashboards often need to be shared outside of this environment. On the other hand, the integration of cockpit graphs with operational reports in the Warehouse Monitor is a significant advantage, enabling a quick response to critical situations that the dashboard may highlight.

Another limitation is performance. Evaluating tens of thousands of records using ABAP functions takes some time, so the cockpit proves unsuitable for more extensive analyses.

For strategic reporting, we prefer using SAP Fiori, where KPIs and graphs are defined directly on CDS Views. In this area, we have already found several improvements over the standard for evaluating warehouse processes.

Business case

It is necessary to perform quick evaluations over large volumes of constantly changing data. For these purposes, the warehouse cockpit sometimes proves too slow.

Using dynamic tiles in the Fiori Launchpad, it is necessary to provide the warehouse manager with a quick overview of key values from selected KPIs, with the option to view their details.

The EWM standard offers CDS views for evaluating warehouse operations using Fiori reports and graphs. However, these CDS views do not yet cover the full range of data sources and are more of a template for building truly effective reporting.

We concluded that it’s necessary to prepare a better data foundation for more effective evaluation, and the result is:

  • Extension of CDS Views compared to the EWM standard, with additional fields for more detailed analysis
  • Model KPI reports (graphs or tables) based on these CDS views
  • Setting up basic KPIs as dynamic tiles in the Fiori Launchpad
  • Each tile can contain a constantly updating mini-graph with the key indicator value
  • By clicking on the tile, one or more views of the area are offered using detailed graphs or table summaries

Our extended CDS View on outbound delivery items allows, compared to the standard, the evaluation of, for instance:

  • Overall processing status of the item (not started, ready for picking, picked, packed, staged for loading, loaded, goods issue posted).
  • Open and already completed quantities for picking and packing for overall summaries.
  • Number of items with a specific processing status (see above).
  • Average delay in completing individual dispatch steps (picking, packing, loading, goods issue) compared to planned deadlines for each delivery item – for evaluating process bottlenecks.
  • Average duration of individual steps in the dispatch process (from item creation, creating a TO for picking, complete picking, through consolidation, packing, staging for loading, loading, and the final goods issue) – for example, to evaluate the average total processing time of an e-shop order in warehouse processes from its handover to the warehouse to final dispatch.

Evaluating approximately 30,000 items takes an average of 3 seconds and is available on a computer, tablet, and smartphone.

Evaluation of the number of outbound delivery items according to planned goods issue dates, with an indication of their processing status.
Option for further breakdown of a specific planned goods issue date with an overview of open and completed items by warehouse zones.

Examples of KPI display on a smartphone:

Overview of quantities in open TOs for picking by planned completion date and activity areas.
Overview of the number of open picking TOs by planned completion date and activity areas.
